This is a magazine I picked up in the Manchester based clothing store Oi Polloi, I enjoy its style and tone throughout it’s design. I really liked the consistent colour scheme and the quality of print (provided by Push-Print). The first image which is the inside of the cover, carries the whole vibe of the design really well. It could be worth to look into designing some pages in our zine with imagery of a similar sort. With the theme being water it could work really well having some manipulated images of water patterns featuring somewhere within it - (bearing in mind if it is fitting with the rest of the content within it).

I decided to contact my old tutor who is a creator and collector of zines. He’s involved with writing and designing various punk fanzines and it’s interesting to explore the reasoning for why they are created. Ultimately these punk zines are there to serve a purpose to a certain community of people. A collection of content varying from articles relating to punk ideologies - for example the understanding and influence of nihilism in punk culture. Then to the community of punk: reviews of gigs, albums etc.

It’s nice to see the connection of visual ascetic and content. With the imagery they pay commendation to raw, punk inspired designers such as David Carson and Jamie Reid. Especially in the last image where you can see by the arrangement of type in a dysfunctional manner.

You can also appreciate the idea of them carrying on the tradition of zines within punk culture. As punk was initially created to be an anti establishment subculture, the use of zines to unite and inform the subculture has always been a prominent force. Keeping in with the old ascetic.

To see good substance and strong reasoning for making these zines is inspiring. Whilst I may not be able to fully connect and appreciate all the content, it’s nice to see that people can find satisfaction in reading these. Rather than it being a self indulgent and far too personal the outcome. It is there to truly inform and to create some sense of unity. To inspire people in a positive way, not to be nonsensical and to be too niche.

The artist Leif Podhajsky was one of the main inspirations for my development of patterns. Through him I found many other artist of inspiration also.

There’s a nice level of abstraction to these album artworks he’s made. It suggest colour and tone to the mirror the music within and also represents the music lyrically as well. With the second image for example the music is quite warm and positive yet it has psychedelic elements to it - with that comes echo and reverb. Almost a waviness to it and a journey is also connoted too and with the artwork I think he captures that really well. With the voidness and vacum like imagery created.

still pissed that this dude just straight up ignored me about helping me print some books. times like this make me want to truly believe in karma, but nah. looking at the world’s current state of affairs, karma couldn’t possibly exist.

so blogosphere, do you know anyone good who could help me with printing? i’m working on some small zines with a few artists right now, but i want to make some artists books/monographs by the end of the year !
